Rio Tinto signs JDA to participate in the design of an Ammonia Dual-fueled Newcastlemax Bulk Carrier

news-details

Rio Tinto has recently signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to participate in the design of an ammonia dual-fueled Newcastlemax bulk carrier, as updated on social media platformed of the Rio Tinto.

Rio Tinto will work with K-Line, NS United, and Nihon Shipyard on the JDA, led by ITOCHU Corporation, which will also study the ammonia fuel supply chain structure and the potential of including such vessels to Rio Tinto’s future freight portfolio.

This JDA builds on the collaboration with ITOCHU’s MOU and the Global Maritime Forum’s “The Next Wave Green Corridors” study, that suggests ammonia as one of the most promising alternative marine fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the shipping industry.

To deliver zero emission shipping by 2050, zero emission vessels need to become the default choice for newbuilds by 2030.

Rio Tinto is committed to supporting efforts that accelerate the adoption of zero emission vessels, and this includes introducing zero emission vessels as part of our portfolio by 2030.
